Developed by RESNET, the Home Energy Rating System Index (HERS) is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured and the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home’s energy performance.

Home Energy Rating System

How it works

A home rated on the HERS Index will be given a score based upon its energy performance as determined by a certified RESNET Home Energy Rater. The LOWER the score, the more energy efficient the home.

The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS Index while a standard new home is awarded a rating of 100. Therefore, a home scoring 70 on the HERS Index is 30% MORE energy efficient than a standard new home, and one scoring 130 will be 30% LESS efficient than a standard new home.

Why do a Home Energy Rating?

It Pays to Know the HERS Index Score BEFORE You Buy!

  • Know the projected energy costs of living in the home you are planning to buy. If the home you want to buy doesn’t have a HERS Index Score – ask for one.

A Low HERS Index Score Adds VALUE and COMFORT to a Home

  • A more energy efficient home can command a higher resale price while improving the quality of life enjoyed by you and your family.

Enjoy Peace of Mind by Knowing Your HERS Index Score

  • Doing a home energy rating through a certified RESNET Home Energy Rater gives you the security of knowing how energy efficient your home really is and how you can improve your HERS Index Score.
